We are a leading supplier and manufacturer of measurement and sensor technology. The group develops joysticks, tilt sensors, and many other components for almost all industrial sectors. For 75 years, the company has concentrated its expertise at its headquarters in Berlin. Together with three other plants in Brandenburg and Hesse, FSG employs more than 500 people.

For heavy-duty applications in agricultural technology, the CAN-based communication protocol SAE J1939 has established itself as a standard. FSG sensors are available with all common interfaces and support the respective industry-standard protocols – including SAE J1939. A practical example for agricultural technology is the new SL00-R family of cable-extension sensors in combination with the FSG MH1023 rotary encoder, which offers SAE J1939 support.

A typical application for the combination of the MH1023 and SL00-R in commercial vehicles, mobile machinery, and agricultural implements is linear position and displacement measurement. This includes, for example, lifting and folding systems for booms or supports, as well as telescopic arms.

The rotary encoder uses the SAE J1939 communication protocol to exchange data determined by the cable pull sensor with the higher-level control electronics of the vehicle or machine, including measured values, status information and diagnostic parameters.

Defined parameter groups (PGNs), unique device addressing, and integrated diagnostic functions allow sensors like the MH1023 to be efficiently integrated into existing vehicle architectures. Especially in complex machines with multiple electronic control units, SAE J1939 simplifies system integration, reduces wiring effort, and supports reliable communication even under harsh operating conditions.

Versatile rotary encoder MH1023

The FSG MH1023 rotary encoder is versatile and has proven itself in mobile cranes, forestry machines and vehicles, rail applications, and agricultural technology. The MH1023 can be equipped with all common analog and digital interfaces, as well as virtually any desired plug or cable connection.

FSG currently offers the rotary encoder in six versions, in single-turn or multi-turn configurations (for up to 4096 revolutions), with a standard aluminum housing and optional stainless steel versions. Models with ATEX, IECEx, or DNV approvals are also available, as well as redundant sensors for safety-critical applications. All models share a robust design with high IP protection (up to IP69k) and a long service life – essential for use in harsh environments.

SL00-R cable pull sensor – high flexibility, robust design

Devices in the SL00-R series demonstrate their strengths wherever precise measurement data is required, where the outdoor working environment demands a robust design, and where compact dimensions are essential. Currently, two sizes are available: the SL00-R-GS80 with measuring lengths up to 3 meters and the SL00-R-GS130 with measuring lengths up to 7 meters. The housing is made of V2A stainless steel, and the strong return spring reduces cable sag.

The unique selling point and core concept of this series is its high degree of flexibility with regard to mounting, cable routing, encoder selection, and signal output configuration. A rotary encoder can be mounted on either side of the housing, allowing the cable routing to be oriented left or right as needed. An optional 360° deflection pulley enables the cable to be guided in any desired direction.

Powerful combination for agricultural technology

Combined, the MH1023 rotary encoder and the SL00-R offer clear advantages for use in the harsh environment of everyday agricultural work. Manufacturers of agricultural machinery and special-purpose vehicles benefit from the easy integration of FSG devices into existing networks. Comprehensive support for common interfaces and protocols such as CAN bus/ISOBUS and SAE J1939 ensures standardized communication within the vehicle network. Development effort for new vehicles and machines is reduced, and commissioning is quick.
